“Jinshi • Zen Heart—A Special Exhibition of Wu Changshuo’s Works from the Collection of the National Art Museum of China” systematically explores Wu Changshuo’s artistic inheritance, development, and personal innovations inspired by Bada Shanren through three thematic sections: “Homage,” “Comparison,” and “Innovation.” The cross-temporal dialogue between these two great artists has garnered widespread acclaim.
Eight Greats was particularly skilled at painting lotus flowers. Using the lotus as a benchmark, one can clearly see how Eight Greats bridged the past and the future in the realm of art. The lotus paintings by such masters as Wu Changshuo, Zhang Daqian, Li Kuchan, and Pan Tianshou all bear the unmistakable influence of Eight Greats’ brushwork and ink techniques. On more than one occasion, Wu Changshuo inscribed comments beneath his ink-and-water lotus works, stating: “Last night, Xue Ge entered my dream and urged me to pick up my brush and paint lotus flowers. Vast stretches of misty waters stretch out before me—what can be done when the Five Lakes have no master?” This vividly reveals his admiration for and devotion to Bada Shanren. As we bask in the height of summer, the lotus flowers at the Bada Shanren Memorial Hall are in full bloom, gracefully unfurling and folding—a scene brimming with innocent charm. This August, under the theme of “Lotus,” we invite you to the Bada Shanren Memorial Hall through the art forms of ink painting and creative visual arts!
