Introduction by Mr. Peng Youyi
Mr. Peng Youshan is a famous artist, educator and founder of modern ceramic education in my country. Because of his knowledge of Chinese and Western, superb painting skills, and outstanding achievements, he is listed in the "Painting Collection of Modern Chinese Masters". He is another outstanding art master in our province after Bada Shanren and Fu Baoshi.
Peng Youshan, nicknamed Chaozhen, also known as Tiger Maniac Layman and Natural Believer. Born in Yugan, Jiangxi Province in 1911, he entered the Department of Fine Arts of Nanjing Central University in 1931, studied Western painting under the tutelage of Mr. Xu Beihong, and worshiped old Baishi as his teacher in his middle age.
In his youth, he was keen to make large-scale figure paintings with allegorical and symbolic techniques. In his later years, he liked to describe natural scenery, such as animals, landscapes, flowers and birds, etc., especially tigers, orchids and bamboos. It is well-known at home and abroad for its masterpieces such as "Nightmare", "The World of Great Harmony", "Heroes and Beauty", "Unity in the Same Boat", "All People Celebrate Peace", "Eternal Life", "Long Roaring" and "Hundred Tiger Picture". Solo exhibitions were held in Wuhan, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and other places, and received rave reviews. His works are collected by National Art Museum of China, Truman Library, Central Museum of Culture and History, Jiangsu Art Museum, Guangzhou Art Museum, Zhejiang Museum of Culture and History, Guyuan Art Museum, as well as Chinese and foreign historical celebrities Chiang Ching-kuo, Truman, Marshall, etc.
His works include "Ten Laws of Modern Painting", "The Art of Painting Tigers", "Peng Youshan's Painting Collection", "Painting Collection of Famous Modern Chinese Artists" and so on.
He died of illness on August 16, 1997, at the age of eighty-seven.
