Original works from the Eight Great Mountains Man Memorial Museum are featured in the China National Art Museum’s exhibition celebrating its 60th anniversary.

The exhibition “Ink Charm and Cultural Heritage—Eight Great Masters, Shitao, and Chinese Freehand Art Since the 20th Century” opened at the National Art Museum of China on May 23, 2023. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the opening of the National Art Museum of China, General Secretary Xi’s reply not only sets forth expectations and requirements for the National Art Museum itself, but also applies equally to museums and art galleries at all levels across the country.

The exhibition by National Art Museum of China, Palace Museum, Nanjing Museum, Sichuan Museum, Guangzhou Museum of Art, Eight Great Masters Memorial Hall Co-organized, Centered on the essence of "xieyi"—the most quintessentially Chinese artistic style—this exhibition brings together artworks from the Ming and Qing dynasties as well as from the modern era, showcasing the spirit and high standards of xieyi in Chinese art history. The exhibited works are divided into two chronological sections: ancient and modern. The ancient section features primarily works by Bada Shanren and Shitao, highlighting the dynamic interplay between these two master artists’ calligraphy and painting, their eras, society, and personal identities. The modern section traces... 20 The evolution of the Chinese freehand art tradition—deeply influenced by these two figures in terms of both concept and technique over the past century—is intended to reveal, from a broader historical, cultural, and artistic perspective, the height, breadth, and depth to which Chinese artists have achieved through their creative transformation and innovative development of tradition.

This exhibition marks the founding of the National Art Museum of China. The 60th-anniversary special exhibition marks the first public debut of authentic works from the Eight Great Mountains Man Memorial Hall at the National Art Museum of China, and also follows the previous collaboration between the two institutions.
