Zhou Xiaojian, director of the Eight Great Mountains Man Memorial Hall, welcomed Ambassador Akira Akamatsu and provided an introduction to the hall’s basic information. The Eight Great Mountains Man Memorial Hall is the first memorial hall dedicated to an ancient painter established after the founding of New China. It carries out collection, research, and exhibition activities centered on the art of the Eight Great Mountains Man and is now designated as a national first-class museum.


Ambassador Hidetaka Akamatsu has a deep passion for Chinese culture and displays great interest in the life story and artistic achievements of Bada Shanren. During the visit, he carefully examined the exhibits, listened attentively to the explanations, frequently asked questions and engaged in lively exchanges, and repeatedly expressed his admiration.
In recent years, the Eight Great Mountains Man Memorial Hall has continuously hosted various cultural exchange activities, steadily enhancing the influence and appeal of China’s outstanding traditional culture, fostering greater cultural interaction, and fully leveraging the power of culture to strengthen spiritual resilience and drive economic development, thereby injecting vitality into its own growth.

The late-life masterpiece “An Wan Ce” by Bada Shanren is now housed in the Izumiya Museum of Antiquities in Japan. The beginning of each page features an explanatory text: “An Wan. Whenever Shaowen traveled and visited places, he would sketch them in his room—this was his lifelong aspiration. As ‘Linquan Gaozhi’ puts it, ‘One may ‘lie down and roam’—even while seated in the imperial court, one’s heart can still yearn for the mountains and forests. Though one may not always be able to take leisurely journeys through landscapes, one can still capture the mountains and rivers one has previously explored in paintings and hang them on the walls. Thus, though physically lying on one’s bed, one’s spirit can freely roam through the spiritual world created by these paintings.’ The ‘An Wan Album’ is precisely such a pictorial world crafted by the Eight Great Masters—a world where one can ‘lie down and roam.’”
2026 The year is about to usher in the Eight Great Mountainsmen. 400 To mark the anniversary, preparations are underway in an orderly manner for an international symposium centered on the art of Bada Shanren and a global mobilization of Bada Shanren’s collection.
