Exhibition Introduction
Xieyi, originating from traditional Chinese painting, is renowned worldwide for its profound cultural significance. The Eight Great Masters of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties were master figures of Chinese freehand painting. This exhibition specially invites two artists—Jin Shangyi and Wu Weishan—as well as Zhou Shaohua, Cui Zhenkuan, Li Baolin, Zhang Lichen, Li Shinan, Liu Yunquan, Wu Yueshi, Xiong Honggang, and Liu Gang (listed in order of birth month and year). The nine nominated artists aim to trace the development of Chinese freehand painting, guided by the expressive works of Bada Shanren, and to explore how these artists both carry forward Bada Shanren’s artistic style and offer their own unique perspectives in their creations—thus better preserving and promoting traditional Chinese culture.
