Lecture content: "From the Late Qing Dynasty to the May 4th Movement—The Abnormal Mentality and Freehand Spirit in Qi Baishi's Figure Paintings"

Teacher Zhang Tao’s lecture was carried out from two levels: first, he analyzed the sources of learning Qi Baishi’s early figure paintings: the spread and limitations of photography in China; Impersonation and imitation; the liberation of individuality and self-consciousness of modern painters; the "abnormal" mentality implied by the theme of "Li Tieguai" painted by Qi Baishi. The second part focuses on the analysis of the motivation of Qi Baishi's "reform in the declining years". It is precisely because of the prosperity of "vernacular Chinese" and "folklore" brought about by the "May 4th New Culture Movement", which caused the cultural elite to look down. Rediscover folk wisdom, so that "the words spoken by the cart sellers" can also enter the "sacred academic hall, literature and art hall". Only by interpreting Qi Baishi in the era atmosphere of the "May 4th New Culture Movement" can we have a deeper understanding of his self-confidence in vowing that "the coffin will be closed five hundred years later, and there will be a public opinion in the world".
