[Appreciation]

The small portrait of the Mountain Master is both vividly lifelike and profoundly expressive, embodying the high level of Chinese linear-portrait painting and providing a direct visual reference for later generations to understand the physical appearance of Bada Shanren. The painting features nine inscriptions that detail Bada Shanren’s life story and beliefs, possessing great scholarly value. Particularly precious are the six inscriptions personally penned by Bada Shanren himself, each written in one of the four calligraphic styles: regular script, cursive script, clerical script, and seal script. These inscriptions truthfully and comprehensively reflect Bada Shanren’s artistic achievements during his middle years.
