[Appreciation]

This is a representative work from the late years of Bada Shanren, in which he excelled at painting eagles. Drawing inspiration from Lin Liang, a renowned painter of the Ming Dynasty, Shanren nonetheless surpassed his master in both the simplicity of his brushwork and the free-spirited use of ink—truly demonstrating that he had not only inherited his teacher’s art but had even surpassed it. In the painting, two majestic eagles gaze at each other amid withered trees and rugged rocks. The forms are refined and elegant, the brushstrokes round and full-bodied; through their varying heights and perspectives, the birds’ heroic presence seems to leap off the canvas.
