Permanent Exhibition
As an ancient cultural and historical landmark in Nanchang, a renowned city in Jiangnan, the Eight Great Mountains Man Memorial Hall boasts unique natural scenery and profound historical significance. In response to growing public demand for authentic calligraphy and paintings by the Eight Great Mountains Man, in 2009, the Nanchang Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government designated the renovation and expansion project of the Eight Great Mountains Man Memorial Hall as a key “People’s Livelihood Project” in Nanchang, placing it among the city’s three major construction projects. The total investment reached 77 million yuan. After the renovation and expansion, the memorial hall’s占地面积 has been increased from the original 20 mu to 40 mu, with water surrounding it on all four sides, seamlessly blending into Meihu Lake to the southwest. Among these improvements, the Authentic Works Exhibition Hall was completed in January 2011, with a total floor area of 3,981 square meters. Its architectural style is modern, abstract, subtle, and minimalist—a carefully crafted masterpiece led by Mr. Qi Kang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the Architectural Design Research Institute at Southeast University. The hall primarily showcases authentic calligraphy and paintings by the Eight Great Mountains Man and other renowned artists throughout history. Integrating high-tech display equipment with modern museum management concepts, the hall breaks away from traditional, outdated collection and exhibition methods, embracing new ideas and approaches. It has created platforms for promotion, research, exchange, and creation, providing visitors with a broader environment for artistic interaction while systematically and orderly presenting the authentic works of the Eight Great Mountains Man as well as masterpieces by contemporary and near-contemporary artists.
The Authentic Works Gallery is surrounded by water on three sides, giving it the shape of a peninsula. Blending seamlessly with the picturesque natural setting and guided by a “people-oriented” design philosophy, the entire building features a symmetrical layout along an axial line. The gallery is a two-story frame structure that combines modern architectural styles with the classic Huizhou residential style. Predominantly in shades of gray and white, the building embodies the Taoist concept of “yin and yang.” Its three square roofs with four-sloped designs echo the site of the former Qingyun Pavilion. All exhibition facilities within the gallery employ the most advanced technologies currently used in the construction of historical artifact galleries. The gallery is meticulously divided into specialized areas, including authentic works exhibition halls, temporary exhibition spaces, galleries showcasing masterpieces by renowned artists, calligraphy and painting creation studios, artifact storage rooms, artifact restoration workshops, security control centers, VIP reception rooms, and security personnel offices. With a total usable area of 3,180 square meters, the space is rationally arranged and highly functional, enabling the gallery to host art exhibitions meeting international standards. Relying on the immense influence of Bada Shanren in the history of international art, the Bada Shanren Authentic Works Gallery will become another distinctive architectural landmark—rich in local character and historical significance—within Nanchang’s ancient cultural and humanistic landscape.
The memorial hall houses numerous authentic masterpieces by Bada Shanren. Among them, "Ink Lotus," "Two Eagles," and "Solitary Pine" are all representative works. In addition, the hall also boasts collections of artworks by such renowned painters in art history as Shitao, Xu Wei, Huang Shen, Zheng Banqiao, Wu Changshuo, and Qi Baishi.
