An Initiative for Civilized Tomb-Sweeping During Qingming Festival
Qingming Festival is a traditional holiday for expressing grief, commemorating ancestors, and honoring heroic martyrs. To carry forward traditional virtues, promote positive social customs, foster a new ethos of civility, and create a peaceful, civilized, and harmonious environment for tomb-sweeping activities in Nanchang, all government officials and public servants throughout the city—especially Party members and cadres—should take the lead in practicing civilized tomb-sweeping during Qingming Festival and fully play a role as exemplary leaders. We hereby issue the following appeal:
I. Set an example in civilized grave sweeping.
Party members and cadres in government agencies should take the lead in practicing the development philosophy of ecological priority and green development, safeguarding the integrity of our ecological environment. They should also take the initiative to abandon environmentally harmful and unsafe mourning practices such as setting off firecrackers and burning joss paper, and instead adopt low-carbon, eco-friendly methods to commemorate loved ones—such as offering flowers, writing wishes on cards, tying yellow ribbons, engaging in home-based remembrance, and conducting online memorial ceremonies—thus setting an example and encouraging citizens to embrace a new, civilized approach to tomb-sweeping.
II. Increase publicity on changing customs and practices.
Party members and cadres in government agencies should vigorously promote and actively publicize the traditional Chinese virtues of "respecting, honoring, caring for, and filial piety toward the elderly." They should proactively educate their relatives, friends, and surrounding communities about the new concept of "emphasizing care over burial," and raise awareness about the adverse effects—such as environmental pollution, safety hazards, and wasteful spending—associated with setting off firecrackers, burning paper offerings and joss paper, and using non-compliant funeral products. They should also promote a civilized approach to mourning that shifts from "focusing on outward appearances" to "placing greater emphasis on emotional connection," thereby fostering new ideas and trends in modern funeral practices and helping to deepen efforts to change outdated customs and social norms.
III. Taking the Lead in Remembering the Martyrs and Heroes
All government agencies and organizations should, in conjunction with thematic Party Day activities and the “Three Connections, Three Displays, Three Services” initiative, organize and guide Party members and cadres to participate in Qingming Festival commemorations honoring revolutionary martyrs, thereby enhancing their reverence for these martyrs, deepening their gratitude toward them, and strengthening their commitment to carrying forward their legacy. We must vigorously promote the revolutionary spirit and further advance patriotic education in the new era.
